SUPPORT OUR 2009 APPEAL

CLICK HERE TO HELP FIND A CURE FOR CANCER

A note from Leanne Warner, CEO, Cure Cancer Australia.

Right now thousands of Australians and their families are facing cancer.  Your generosity will help us to fund desperately needed breakthrough cancer research to reduce the pain and anguish of all Australians and their families who are affected by cancer.

Generous community support over the years has enabled us to offer National funding to the most promising researchers working in cancer.  However, the challenge is still great, and there is still so much left to do.  There are so many outstanding young researchers who need funding support to continue their work for the benefit of all Australians.

Researchers like Dr Rachel Gibson need your support.  Rachel is an incredible young researcher working to reduce the distress chemotherapy patients suffer. I recently met with Rachel and she told me how difficult it was for young researchers to get funding every year.  Most young researchers go through a process of applying for grant funding every year, just hoping that their application will be successful, with no guarantee of further funding support.

Rachel told me that one of the common side effects for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy is diarrhoea.  What this means is that on top of everything else cancer sufferers are enduring, they also face the distress of this awful and embarrassing side effect caused by their treatment.  Rachel is one of our youngest and brightest researchers working to reduce the negative side effects caused by chemotherapy treatment, such as diarrhoea.

Through her work, Rachel has met with cancer patients who were incredibly sick and who would not benefit themselves from the work she was doing, but who offered to provide specimens to support her research.  Rachel told me: I will never forget these people. I was no longer working with specimens, but with real people, with real families, who would not benefit but wanted to make sure others would.

I am personally inspired by Rachel's story and the strength of the people Rachel worked with.  If people facing cancer, at the worst time in their lives refuse to give up, and go on fighting to improve the lives of others with cancer, when they themselves are horrendously ill, my team and I cannot give up this fight.

There are many more researchers like Rachel who need your help to be able to continue their work.  Researchers like Shane Thomas.  Shane has written to us, and to all of you who support us, to express his heartfelt thanks for your generous support, which enabled he and his team to receive funding last year for their project. Click here to read Shane's letter.

With your kindness, together we can win the fight against cancer.

Please support our mission to cure cancer by sending your tax deductible gift by Tuesday 30th June.  At this time I will be assessing the funds we have available for the year ahead to fund vital research projects like Rachel's and Shane's, and the other young, bright researchers you see below.

LETTER FROM CURE CANCER AUSTRALIA'S CEO

Dear Cure Cancer Australia Supporters,

I am excited to have an opportunity to greet you and thank you on behalf of the organisation in my capacity as newly appointed Chief Executive Officer.

I would like to extend my appreciation to all of the people who have played such a significant role in the development of this essential niche cancer research funding organisation. I want to pledge my commitment to add value, and to lead the organisation in striving to identify and fund the very best young scientific talent possible in the fight against cancer.

Cure Cancer Australia, as a national organisation operates with a very small dedicated and dynamic salaried staff base and relies heavily on volunteer and stakeholder support to minimise costs and maintain core funding for research.

I look forward to being guided by our talented and committed Board of Directors and together we will champion the governance and strategy which will ensure funds received are effectively directed. In 2009, we will dedicate over $900,000 to young researchers working on important projects in the fields of cancer cell development, melanoma, leukaemia, pancreatic, childrens, prostate, bowel and liver cancer.

This years contribution to the cancer research community takes our funding total to over $11 million dollars. An achievement we can all be extremely proud of. This significant milestone is testament to the valuable service the Foundation has provided over the past 40 years and is a tribute to the dedication of its followers.

I have a commitment to communication and to establishing partnerships for the organisation, and with over 15 years corporate and 7 years non-profit senior leadership experience in Australia and the United Kingdom, I feel confident that Cure Cancer Australia relationships can be further enhanced.

Thank you once again for your contribution to the Cure Cancer Australia rich tapestry of support. I welcome your involvement, and look forward to celebrating our next milestones, as together, we Contribute to the Cure.

Yours sincerely

Leanne Warner
