National Research Program

Cure Cancer Australia’s National Research Program has recently diversified.

For researchers seeking funding commencing in 2013, Cure Cancer will call for applications via two different processes:

  1. In collaboration with Cancer Australia, via the Priority-driven Collaborative Cancer Research Scheme (PdCCRS), two categories of funding will be available. We fund innovative, high-achieving, early-career researchers, and will be assessing the Track Record and Publications of the Chief Investigator submitted as part of the NHMRC application process to determine the priority of these grants.

     i)    Funding Category B: One year project grants in any field of research (including clinical) into malignant disease, that will provide “start up” funding will be available to support post-doctoral researchers with between one – three years post-doctoral experience or between one - three years post MBBS qualification at the time of application. A maximum of $100,000 (GST-exclusive) will be available for successful applicants. The application deadline will be the same as for NHMRC project grants, and the NHMRC will continue to assess the scientific merit of each application.

ii)    Funding Category C: One - two year project grants in any field of research (including clinical) into malignant disease, for researchers with between four - seven years post-doctoral experience or between four - seven years post MBBS qualification at the time of application. A maximum of $200,000 ($100,000 pa GST-exclusive) will be available for successful applicants. The application deadline will be the same as for NHMRC project grants, and the NHMRC will continue to assess the scientific merit of each application.

2.    Collaboration with other Medical Funding Bodies

Cure Cancer’s CEO Leanne Warner has taken the initiative in encouraging collaboration among cancer research funding bodies in Australia, and starting in 2011 Cure Cancer will be co-funding young cancer researchers in partnership with the Cancer Council NSW, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia, the National Breast Cancer Foundation, and the Leukaemia Foundation.  Consistent with Cure Cancer’s philosophy of funding young investigators with innovative ideas in cancer research, the foundation will fund the first year of larger project grants with each of the above organisations through their respective research grants processes.
