Your tax deductible donation will help us continue to fund Australia's brightest young cancer researchers.
Fortunately, thanks to people like you, we have come a long way and research is saving lives. However, one life lost to cancer, is one life still too many. My focus as CEO of Cure Cancer Australia is to work hard to put as many young researchers in the labs as possible, so that they can investigate cures to this deadly and pervasive disease.
Thanks to your incredible generosity and commitment, we have been able to provide 21 eager researchers with a one year grant of $90,000 each to rigorously pursue their research across all areas of cancer this year. Although this is substantial, there are still hundreds of researchers with promising and innovative ideas who are not working in the labs due to a critical shortage of funding.
Unfortunately, a lack of funding for cancer research means we can’t ease the suffering of patients and save as many precious lives as we have the potential to.

Dr Jeremy Henson works at the Children's Medical Research Unit and is one of the passionate and dedicated researchers who your generosity has already helped to fund. Jeremy believes that this is an exciting time for cancer research, where researchers have opportunities to make big leaps in patient outcomes - but only if they have the funding to do so.
Jeremy’s project focuses on lung cancer research and in particular early testing. Lung cancer isn’t just limited to smokers and is the biggest cause of cancer related death in Australia.
More than 8,000 people are diagnosed and 7,000 people die from lung cancer each year. Early detection can increase average survival three fold.
A 2006 Cure Cancer grant allowed Jeremy to develop a blood test which can potentially be used to better detect and monitor cancer, and is currently being used by other cancer researchers to speed work towards finding a cancer treatment that can kill cancer cells without harming the patient.
Jeremy’s recently earned 2011 grant has provided him with the resources to properly understand how this test can improve patient outcomes. His preliminary results indicate that 10% of lung cancer patients (equates to 750 new Australian diagnoses every year) have cancers that could potentially be detected early by his test.
Jeremy still has a long way to go and is very much aware that without funding from Cure Cancer supporters, he would be limited in his resources to continue investigating this promising result that could lead to a major breakthrough. You can read more about Jeremy’s work in the letter he has written to Cure Cancer Supporters.
